About PolicyGrades
PolicyGrades takes the complaint records that US state insurance departments already publish, puts them on one scale, and grades them. That is the whole product.
Why this exists
The data is public, but it is scattered across fifty regulators, each with its own format, its own definitions and its own lookup tool. Comparing an insurer's record in Texas with its record in another state is work almost nobody will do. Meanwhile the pages that rank highest for "worst insurance companies" are mostly opinion pieces with no figures behind them at all.
How it is funded, and what that does not buy
The site carries advertising. It does not sell insurance, does not sell leads to insurers, and does not take payment from any company that appears in the tables.
No insurer can pay to appear here, to rank higher, or to be removed. The grades are produced by a program from regulator files, and the method is published in full on the methodology page. If a company's grade changes, it is because its filings changed.
Corrections and contact
If a figure does not match the regulator file it came from, tell us and we will check it against the source and correct it. We do not remove accurate figures on request. Every source file is listed and linked on the data sources page, so any number here can be checked independently.
What this site is not
It is not an insurance broker, not a comparison-quote service, and not financial advice. A complaint index describes how often a regulator found a company at fault, relative to its size. It does not predict what will happen with your claim, and it says nothing about price.
